Job Title: Manager - Merchant and Commerce, Sri Lanka & Maldives

Location: Colombo

Purpose of the role

This position leads the development of merchant, acquirer and related channel partner relationships in Sri Lanka & Maldives. The position reports to the Country Manager, Sri Lanka & Maldives.

Primary focus would be on deepening and expanding Mastercard’s merchant & acquirer related relationships with key stakeholders in the ecosystem including acquirers, payment facilitators and merchants across all channels including face to face, online and mobile. The individual will need to establish new partner / vendor / enablers with capabilities to sustain Mastercard’s competitive advantage and tracking performance against key objectives.

Will be responsible for growth and penetration of electronic payments in the Merchant/Acquirer space to drive Mastercard acquiring volumes and revenue.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage relationships with key acquirers, merchants & PSPs to ensure open dialogue, manage day to day business, identify opportunities, enhance business opportunities.
  • Drive and deliver growth in Mastercard’s acquiring volume growth and acquiring revenue in Sri Lanka and Maldives markets while ensuring exponential growth in services revenue.
  • Initiate, design, coordinate and execute merchant funded offers and campaigns.
  • Proactively identify and address Merchant & Commerce barriers and pain points – develop models and frameworks in order to create new solutions (e.g. Pricing, Franchise, Compliance, Legal,) that can help to overcome Merchant & Commerce friction.
  • Development & adoption of emerging payments products like QR based payments & NFC based payments and explore partnership opportunities with acquirers, payment facilitators, wallet providers, and mPOS providers to increase Merchant & Commerce footprint/locations.
  • Growth of reported and processed acquiring volumes, gross and net acquiring revenues and share of acquiring volumes from new sectors/verticals.
  • Identify product synergies/sales opportunities that support relationship development and Mastercard revenue growth (i.e. Co-brand issuance, value add capabilities such as marketing, product, processing, Advisors, QR, Contactless, etc.)
  • In collaboration with issuing-side account managers and marketing, identify opportunities to jointly develop POS spend initiatives.


All About You

  • Significant experience in Sri Lanka in the merchant / acquiring space in business development- both strategy and execution.
  • Good knowledge of electronic payments industry, trends, Merchant & Commerce landscape, acquirer economics and value chain; good awareness of digital payments and convergence trends/technologies in the retail payments business; experience in digital payments will be a strong plus.
  • Track record of building effective product value propositions and/or partnerships on the cards acquiring side of the business.
  • Strong team player, ability to collaborate with peers and proven ability to work in a matrix organization.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Established track record achieving quantitative targets and building business relationships
  • MBA or other equivalent advanced degree.
